44 RECRUITMENT AGENCIES SUMMONED OVER ALLEGED FRAUD AS GOVERNMENT CRACKS DOWN ON ROGUE OPERATORS

The Ministry of Labour has summoned 44 recruitment and travel agencies accused of defrauding Kenyans seeking employment abroad.

In a statement dated Friday, July 18, 2025, Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua said the agencies must appear before the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at the Multi-Agency Taskforce Office, located on the 7th floor of the NSSF Building in Nairobi.

Mutua said the crackdown follows dozens of formal complaints lodged by citizens who claim they were misled, exploited, or defrauded by unlicensed agencies and individuals posing as job placement agents.

“If you’re posing as a travel or recruitment agency and engaging in job placement without proper registration or licenses, we will come for you,” Mutua warned. He added that failure to honour the summons could lead to arrest, prosecution, and deregistration.

The move comes days after a high level meeting chaired by the Labour CS alongside the Attorney General, the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the DCI. The meeting resolved to form a multi-agency taskforce to investigate and take legal action against fraudulent recruiters.

Mutua urged the public to help trace the agencies and inform them of the summons. He also encouraged victims and whistleblowers to continue reporting such cases to the Multi-Agency Response Team.

“Kenyans deserve safe, transparent and dignified access to overseas job opportunities,” Mutua emphasized, vowing to dismantle cartels profiting from job seekers’ desperation.
