AFFORDABLE BODA BODAS: RUTO ANNOUNCES MOTORBIKES TO COST KSH95,000

President William Ruto has announced a significant reduction in the cost of motorbikes, stating that boda bodas will now retail at KSh95,000, down from the previous price of KSh195,000.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, August 7, 2025, during a meeting with national officials of the boda boda sector at State House, Nairobi.
Ruto explained that the move is part of a broader plan to make motorcycles more accessible to ordinary Kenyans, especially those working in the informal transport sector.

“We want every citizen who wants to own a boda boda to afford it,” the President said.

He also revealed a major reduction in loan requirements for buyers. The deposit has been lowered from KSh70,000 to KSh9,500, and the daily repayment amount reduced from KSh500 to KSh180.

Additionally, Ruto said he will urge Parliament to remove the remaining taxes on motorbikes, which could cut prices by another KSh10,000.

During the same event, the President ordered the release of over 9,000 motorcycles currently held in police stations as long as they are not linked to criminal investigations. He directed Interior PS Raymond Omollo and Inspector General Douglas Kanja to act within one week.

Ruto defended the inclusion of boda boda riders in government conversations, saying his bottom-up economic model focuses on empowering citizens from all levels of society.

“Boda boda operators are legitimate entrepreneurs. No one should threaten their business,” he added.
The President affirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the sector through better loan terms, legal reforms, and inclusive policymaking.
