BABU OWINO STEALS THE SHOW IN HOMA BAY:THE RISE OF A NEW LUO KINGPIN?

A dramatic shift in political sentiment played out publicly on Friday at the funeral of the late Albert Ojwang’ in Homa Bay, as ODM leader Raila Odinga was heckled and forced to cut short his address by a section of Gen Z mourners—while Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was cheered and invited to speak by the crowd.

The unexpected turn of events, in what has long been considered Raila’s political stronghold, shocked party loyalists and further highlighted the growing generational shift within Kenyan politics. Witnesses say that as Raila attempted to address the mourners, chants erupted from the crowd demanding that he step down. In contrast, Babu Owino—known for his more radical, youth-friendly stance—was welcomed with loud cheers.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who was also in attendance, reportedly had to cut her speech short as the crowd insisted on hearing from Babu. The moment underscored rising discontent among young Kenyans toward long-serving political figures, even those revered in their home regions.

ODM has since issued a statement condemning the incident and criticizing The Standard Newspaper for what it called “misleading reporting” on Raila’s popularity.

“Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga remains a steadfast statesman and symbol of Kenya’s democratic struggle. A moment of disruption cannot erase decades of sacrifice,” the statement read.
“ODM’s strength is unshakable, and we demand responsible journalism that informs, not inflames.”

However, political observers say the events in Homa Bay reflect a deeper undercurrent of generational frustration within the party and the broader political landscape. The Gen Z-led protests, which have swept the country in recent weeks, appear to be turning their focus inward—demanding not only reforms from the government but also accountability from opposition leaders.
