BURKINA FASO ABOLISHES VIS CHARGES TO BOOST PAN-AFRICAN INTEGRATION

Burkina Faso has abolished visa fees for all African travellers in a bid to facilitate the movement of people and goods into the country. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana announced the measure after a cabinet meeting chaired by military leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré on Thursday. “From now on, any African citizen wishing to enter Burkina Faso will no longer pay visa fees,” Sana stated, while clarifying that applicants must still complete an online visa form, which will undergo a review process.

The move brings Burkina Faso in line with other African nations such as Ghana, Rwanda, and Kenya, which have also relaxed travel restrictions for citizens across the continent.

Previously, nationals from West African states could already travel to Burkina Faso without visas, but this arrangement is now uncertain following the country’s recent withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), alongside Mali and Niger—both also under military regimes.

Since seizing power in 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traoré has styled himself as a Pan-Africanist leader, often criticising Western influence and colonial legacies. His approach has won him admirers across Africa, though he has also faced accusations of authoritarianism and stifling dissent.

In a statement, the junta’s information service described the removal of visa fees as a demonstration of Burkina Faso’s commitment to Pan-Africanist ideals and regional integration.

“The free visa system for African citizens will also encourage tourism, promote Burkinabe culture, and raise the country’s profile internationally,” the statement added.

By eliminating visa fees, Burkina Faso aims to strengthen continental ties, attract more visitors, and boost its cultural influence, even as it continues to face serious internal security challenges.
