BUSIA CHIEF MAGISTRATE RAISES ALARM OVER BROKERS INFILTRATING COURTS

Busia Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti has sounded the alarm over the infiltration of brokers into the court system, warning that the integrity of justice in the region is under threat.
In a letter to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Busia Chapter, Nyaloti cited cases where individuals posing as intermediaries were commercialising judicial processes such as surety approvals and case withdrawals. She noted that one suspect, Michael Noah Wandera, was recently arrested by the DCI for allegedly receiving Ksh10,000 from a litigant in exchange for facilitating a case withdrawal at the Busia Law Courts. A court seal was also recovered during the investigation.
The Chief Magistrate further accused one of the brokers, identified as Maureen Ogola, of threatening court staff with death, raising fears for the safety of judicial officers.
In response, LSK Busia Chairperson Dolan Nabulindo called on Chief Justice Martha Koome to immediately transfer Nyaloti from Busia for her safety. The lawyers’ body warned that advocates would boycott all court proceedings in Busia, Malaba, and Port Victoria if the transfer is not effected within 21 days.
The revelations come amid growing national concern over the rise of imposters and brokers operating within court premises. In April, Chief Justice Koome directed investigative agencies, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, to crack down on individuals exploiting litigants by peddling fake court outcomes and soliciting bribes.
The situation in Busia has now intensified the debate on how to safeguard judicial officers and protect the credibility of Kenya’s justice system.
