CAF SLAPS KENYA WITH KSH 2.5M FINE OVER CHAN 2024 CHAOS AT KASARANI

Kenya has been hit with a hefty Ksh 2.5 million fine by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following a string of security breaches during the Harambee Stars’ CHAN 2024 match against DR Congo.

The disciplinary action was announced on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, just days after the high-stakes Group A clash was held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

According to CAF, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) violated Articles 82 and 83 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, alongside several safety regulations, during the match on August 3 — which Kenya won 1-0.

A detailed report from the CAF Security Officer listed multiple infractions, including a stampede at Gate 11, unauthorized access to Public Security Areas (PSA), and a motorcycle recklessly maneuvering through fans.
The situation escalated further when fires were lit behind Block 18, raising serious concerns about stadium safety. Additionally, State Security officers allegedly denied access to CAF officials, including a member of the South African President’s security team, to the VVIP section.

As a result, CAF handed FKF three separate penalties:
• Ksh 644,500 for the stampede and security zone breaches.
• Ksh 1,289,000 for obstruction and assault of CAF personnel.
• An official warning regarding the fires.

All fines must be paid within 60 days, and CAF has warned that repeat offenses during the remainder of the tournament may trigger stricter sanctions.
In a separate case, FKF was also fined Ksh 644,500 over a previous CHAN 2024 match between Morocco and Angola. However, half of that amount (Ksh 322,250) has been suspended, contingent on FKF maintaining discipline.

The latest events have sparked renewed scrutiny over Kenya’s crowd management capabilities, especially with the Harambee Stars set to return to action against Angola on Thursday, August 7, at 7 PM, again at Kasarani.

Local Organizing Committee Chair Nicholas Musonye had earlier cautioned that any failure to meet CAF standards could lead to serious consequences. He urged fans to cooperate fully and uphold Kenya’s reputation as a host nation.

Meanwhile, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) was also fined USD 10,000 after fans violated security protocols during their CHAN 2024 fixture against Burkina Faso in Dar es Salaam.
