CHAN 2024 KICKS OFF THIS WEEKEND AFTER STADIUM DELAYS

The long-awaited African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 is finally set to begin this Saturday, August 2, following months of delays caused by incomplete stadium renovations across host nations Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Originally scheduled for February, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) postponed the regional tournament to August 2025 after several venues failed to meet the required international standards in time. However, with the infrastructure now ready, excitement is building across East Africa as the region prepares to host CHAN for the first time in history.
Tanzania will host the opening match between the Taifa Stars and Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday. Kenya’s Harambee Stars will play their debut CHAN match on Sunday, August 3, against two-time champions DR Congo at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has hailed the tournament as a major economic opportunity, saying it will boost tourism, create jobs, and promote regional unity. Former Harambee Stars captain Dennis Oliech has been appointed the official brand ambassador to rally support for the Kenyan team and increase fan engagement.
The 2024 edition of CHAN features 19 national teams comprised exclusively of players active in their home leagues. The month-long tournament will serve as a critical rehearsal ahead of AFCON 2027, which East Africa will also co-host.
With all systems now go, fans are gearing up for a football-filled August as the region shines on the continental stage.
