COVERAGE OF PROTESTS PROHIBITED

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has instructed all television and radio stations to immediately cease live broadcasts of the ongoing June 25 demonstrations.

In a letter addressed to mainstream media outlets and obtained by Viral Tea on Wednesday, June 25, the regulator noted that the coverage violated specific provisions of Kenya’s Constitution.

“The live coverage of the June 25, 2025 demonstrations goes against Articles 33(2) and 34(1) of the Constitution of Kenya, as well as Section 46(1) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998,” the CA explained.

The statement further declared action against those who will fail to comply.

“This is therefore to direct all television and radio stations to halt live coverage of the demonstrations with immediate effect. Failure to comply with this directive will lead to regulatory action as outlined under the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998,” the authority warned.

As Kenyans take to the streets to protest, this latest move has sparked questions about the shrinking space for independent journalism — and whether the public will receive a truthful picture of the unfolding events without interference.

This can also be viewed as a deliberate move to infringe the democratic rights for protests and prevent the media from exposing the atrocities.
