D.C. FEELS LIKE NAIROBI’S HARAMBEE AVENUE, SAYS ODM YOUTH LEADER ON U.S. VISIT

ODM youth leader and activist Kasmuel McOure has drawn a striking comparison between the United States capital, Washington D.C., and Nairobi’s iconic Harambee Avenue, known for hosting Kenya’s top government offices.

While on an official visit to the American city, Kasmuel noted that the atmosphere in D.C. was heavily administrative and politically charged with a formal, almost rigid vibe that reminded him of the Kenyan capital’s government district.

Having spent his morning in official meetings, the youthful politician later toured the Federal Triangle, the stretch between the Capitol and the White House, often referred to as “America’s Main Street.” He observed that while the area is rich in symbolism and power, it lacks the vibrance and urban culture seen in other world cities, likening its stiff ambiance to that of Parliament Road.

“D.C. runs on structure and purpose,” Kasmuel noted, describing how even public amenities like benches were few and far between reinforcing the city’s focus on work over leisure.

Despite its global political weight, Washington D.C. spans just 159 square kilometres and houses a resident population of about 700,000 — numbers that swell during the week due to administrative operations and tourism. In contrast, Nairobi, nearly five times larger in size, blends government with business and diverse cultural lifestyles.

While both cities are epicentres of power in their respective countries, Nairobi boasts a richer mix of ethnic and economic dynamics. D.C., on the other hand, remains tightly bound to the federal government, its largest employer, giving it a culture steeped in policy, diplomacy, and bureaucracy.

Kasmuel’s reflections come as part of a wider youth engagement tour aimed at fostering global exposure and civic awareness among emerging African leaders.
