DCI ARREST TAXI DRIVER FOR STEALING 500K FROM CUSTOMERS HE WAS FERRYING TO AIR BNB

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a taxi driver over theft. In a statement, DCI said the suspect stole KSh 500,000 from his customer on the night of August 8, 2025, in Lavington, Nairobi. The suspect identified as Fred Atandi Morara alleged stole a phone from his client who had hired him to drop him at an Airbnb within Lavington.
"The arrest of the suspect, Fred Atandi Morara, by DCI HQS detectives yesterday followed a report by the male complainant, who alleged that on the fateful night, a random taxi driver hired to drop him off at an Airbnb within Lavington had stolen his phone and transferred over KSh 500,000 from his accounts," DCI said on Wednesday, August 3 2025.
DCI report indicates that the complainant was leaving an entertainment joint with a friend, but in the process of requesting an Uber taxi, the suspect, who had parked nearby, convinced them that he would charge them less.
After dropping them at their destination, the driver disappeared with the client's phone and transferred money to different accounts. "According to the report, the complainant was leaving a social joint in the company of a friend, and was in the process of requesting Uber services when the suspect, who waited nearby, beckoned and convincingly offered more competitive charges. After dropping them off, he disappeared with the phone and managed to transfer the money to different accounts, which were later deactivated," detectives said.
During his arrest, Morara was found driving a Mazda Demio fitted with suspected fake registration plates. He was also found in possession of assorted mobile phones and several SIM cards. "Morara was arrested operating a Mazda Demio fitted with suspected fake registration plates, KDQ 810B, with another spare set registration number KDN 993Q. Also recovered from him were assorted mobile phones, several sim cards and a sisal rope. He has been handed over to DCI Dagoretti for further processing," the report showed.
