EACC PROBES 16 GOVERNORS IN ONGOING KSH 1.6 BILLION GRAFT CRACKDOWN

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed that it is investigating five current and 11 former county governors over allegations of corruption and abuse of office. Speaking on Friday, August 22, 2025, EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud said the investigations are part of a wider crackdown on graft in county governments. The probe targets misuse of public funds through irregular procurement processes, inflated tenders, and accumulation of unexplained wealth. According to Mohamud, the Commission is currently pursuing cases involving over Ksh1.6 billion and implicating 822 county officials.

The officials are accused of various offenses, including irregular hiring, payroll manipulation, misappropriation of car and mortgage loan funds, and dubious allowance claims. “Among these cases are four involving both current and former county governors, two former Cabinet Secretaries, a Principal Secretary, and heads of state corporations,” Mohamud revealed. He added that the EACC has concluded 89 high-profile investigations in the past eight months, 82 of which have already been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) with recommendations for prosecution.

Since January 2025, the Commission has recovered 12 properties valued at approximately Ksh600 million, along with more than Ksh105 million in cash. Additionally, its proactive investigations have prevented a potential loss of Ksh7.2 billion in public funds. The EACC emphasized that no individual will be spared, regardless of their political status or office. “Everyone found culpable will be held accountable,” the Commission stated, while urging the public to report corruption and demand transparency from leaders. Mohamud further assured Kenyans that the Commission is intensifying both its enforcement and preventive measures to protect public resources.
