EAK Appeals for Hope, Unity and Urgent Reforms in Face of National Challenges

Church leaders under the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK) have made a heartfelt appeal to Kenyans to remain hopeful and united amid this difficult and uncertain time for the country.

Meeting in Nairobi representatives from all 47 counties gathered to reflect on the state of the nation and chart a way forward.

The EAK acknowledged the frustrations many citizens are facing from rising living costs to insecurity and political disillusionment, but urged Kenyans not to lose hope.

“We know the country is going through tough times, but we must not be discouraged,” stated EAK. “Now more than ever, we need unity, prayer, and honest conversations about where we are heading.”

Top on the church leaders’ list of concerns was the delay in reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). With the next general election drawing closer, EAK called on Parliament to urgently approve the newly nominated commissioners so the commission can begin its work in good time.

The alliance also invited Christians across the country to set aside at least ten minutes on Sunday, May 18, for prayer and reflection on the importance of family. They described the family as the foundation of a moral and resilient society, saying the country’s healing must begin at home.

On the economy, EAK did not mince words. The rising national debt, punitive taxes, and unsustainable spending have left many Kenyans struggling, they said, warning that the crisis could deepen if not urgently addressed. The alliance called on President William Ruto to convene a National Restoration Convention, a proposal first made last year, to bring together key voices and find solutions.

Turning to politics, the alliance expressed concern over the current structure of government, particularly the broad-based arrangement between ruling and opposition parties. According to EAK, this setup has blurred accountability and eroded public trust.

“The current state of governance, where one party seems to operate both in government and opposition, is confusing and weakens our democratic checks and balances,” they said.
