EDITORS SLAM POLICE IG AFTER JOURNALISTS ATTACKED BY GOONS

The Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG) has condemned Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja after journalists were attacked and robbed by hired goons while covering the homecoming of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday.
Reporters from The Standard Group, Citizen TV, and TV47 were assaulted, their equipment vandalised, and vehicles damaged as police officers reportedly stood by without offering protection.
In a statement on Friday August 22, 2025, KEG accused the police of failing in their constitutional duty to safeguard the media and demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those behind the violence.
“Once again, members of the press were assaulted, equipment stolen, and vehicles vandalised — all while police officers stood by and watched. This was not an accident but a systematic attempt to silence the media,” the Guild said.
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) also called on the police to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure perpetrators are held accountable, warning that press freedom was under threat.
