Former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier and U.S. Army veteran Patrick Osoi has been arrested in Nairobi, just days after launching an anti-brutality campaign dubbed Fighting Brutality and Impunity (FBI).
Osoi, who is also a 2027 presidential hopeful, was seized from his residence on Tuesday July 29, 2025, at night by heavily armed detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). His communications team described the arrest as an "abduction," alleging he was taken without a warrant or prior notice.
He was detained at Muthaiga Police Station and arraigned Wednesday July 30, 2025, morning, where he was charged with preparation to commit a felony. The specifics of the alleged offense were not disclosed to the media.
Osoi had recently launched the FBI movement with a coalition of former security officers, aiming to hold state agencies accountable for alleged brutality and extrajudicial killings. The group emerged in the wake of public outrage over police conduct during the recent anti-Finance Bill protests, which saw dozens of youths killed or injured.
His arrest has sparked fresh concerns from civil rights groups and political observers, who say it could signal an attempt by the state to intimidate dissenters and silence voices calling for justice and reform.
The government is yet to issue an official statement on the arrest.
