Long-serving Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Chwele–Kabuchai Ward, Barasa Mukhongo, has passed away after a long illness.
Mukhongo, who represented the ward under the FORD-Kenya party, died on Monday morning August 4, 2025, while receiving treatment at Hopekin Hospital in Bungoma town. He served five consecutive terms, making him one of the longest-serving MCAs in the county.
Governor Kenneth Lusaka mourned him as “a dedicated public servant and a bold voice for the voiceless,” adding that his leadership was marked by humility, honesty, and unwavering service to his constituents.
Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli and Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga also paid tribute, describing Mukhongo as a grassroots leader who championed development and unity throughout his political career.
Funeral arrangements are underway, and the county government is expected to support the family during the mourning period.
Mukhongo’s death leaves a significant gap in the county assembly, where he had earned respect across the political divide for his wisdom and experience.
