HELB TO REVISE FUNDING FORMULA AHEAD OF 2025 SEPTEMBER INTAKE

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced plans to adjust its student funding formula before the September 2025 university intake.

HELB Chairperson Ekwee Ethuro said on Thursday that while the current model under the New Funding Formula has been in use, it will undergo changes to reflect concerns raised by Kenyans.

“We use this formula, but the parameters will be revised to address public concerns. The model is evolving,” Ethuro explained.

He assured the 2024 KCSE candidates that all eligible applicants would receive funding. Ethuro added that the amount issued will depend on internal needs assessments, with payments likely disbursed in September.

Applicants will apply online and receive confirmation via SMS, followed by disbursement notifications once funds are released by the Treasury. HELB says upkeep money will be sent through M-PESA.

However, HELB CEO Geoffrey Monari earlier warned that the board is facing a Ksh36.1 billion shortfall in the 2025/26 financial year. This could affect over 468,000 students if additional funding is not secured.

Despite the looming budget gap, HELB maintains that efforts are underway to ensure timely disbursement and that no qualified applicant will be left out in the first semester.
