HOSPITALS IN KENYA THAT WILL PROVIDE LENACAPAVIR HIV INJECTION

Kenya is among the first nine countries globally selected to launch Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable HIV prevention drug, starting January 2026. The National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP) has confirmed that the rollout will begin in select public hospitals before expanding nationwide. NASCOP Head Dr. Andrew Mulwa said the government is working with global health partners to ensure a smooth and equitable rollout. While discussions continue, the drug is expected to be widely available in both public and private hospitals.

Initial distribution will target major public hospitals such as Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, along with key county-level facilities. Other hospitals expected to receive the drug include Coast General, Embu Level 5, Kisii, Kakamega, Nakuru, Garissa, Meru, Machakos, Kisumu, and Bungoma referral hospitals. Dr. Mulwa noted that Lenacapavir will be free in public hospitals, especially for vulnerable groups, while private hospitals may charge a fee. Pricing discussions are ongoing, with efforts underway to ensure affordability and accessibility.

Lenacapavir, approved by the U.S. FDA in June 2025 and endorsed by the WHO in July, is the world’s first twice-yearly injectable PrEP. It is administered under the skin of the abdomen and requires an initial oral phase. Kenyan officials hope it will improve prevention adherence, particularly among youth and high-risk groups, who account for 41% of new infections.
