HOUSEHELP ARRESTED AFTER STEALING KSH2.2M FROM EMPLOYER

A househelp accused of stealing Ksh2.2 million from her employer has been arrested, bringing an end to a weeks-long search by law enforcement. The suspect, identified as Fleviar Muhonja, was apprehended in Mombasa after allegedly fleeing Nairobi with the stolen cash.

According to police reports, the theft took place at a residence in Karen, Nairobi, where Muhonja had been employed for several months. The employer, who requested anonymity, stated that he discovered the money missing after returning home one evening.

"I was shocked. She had always been a trusted member of our household. It never crossed my mind that she would do something like this," the distraught employer told reporters.

Detectives launched an investigation, tracking Muhonja’s movements to Mombasa, where she was reportedly hiding with the stolen money. Authorities say she had already spent a portion of the funds but declined to disclose the exact amount recovered.

"We managed to track her down through intelligence reports. She was found living in a rental house in Mombasa, and part of the stolen money was retrieved," said an officer involved in the case.

Residents in the area expressed shock at the arrest, with some neighbors saying Muhonja had been living a lavish lifestyle since her arrival.

"She was always shopping and dressing well. We thought she had landed a well-paying job," said a local shopkeeper.

Muhonja is set to be arraigned in court, where she will face charges of theft. Police have urged employers to conduct thorough background checks when hiring domestic workers to prevent similar incidents.

The case has sparked a conversation on the importance of financial security and trust within households, with authorities emphasizing the need for vigilance in handling large sums of money at home.
