Husband Becomes Prime Suspect in Murder of Missing M-Pesa Agent Hannah Waithera

What began as a missing person’s report has now developed into a suspected murder case, with the husband of 23-year-old M-Pesa agent Hannah Waithera emerging as the main suspect. Waithera’s body was discovered in a decomposed state in Nakuru West, a week after she vanished from her workplace in the Nakuru CBD on May 21.

The main suspect, Zacharia Wanjohi , who is also Waithera’s husband ,is now in police custody after inconsistencies emerged in his initial report to investigators. Wanjohi had claimed that Waithera’s phone signal was last traced heading towards Nairobi. However, investigators later confirmed that her phone signal matched his own location on the day she disappeared.

Authorities say the two were in the same vicinity, raising major concerns about his involvement. This contradiction, along with other gaps in his account of events, led to his arrest.

Wanjohi was arraigned in a Nakuru court on Tuesday, June 4, where the prosecution sought to have him detained for an additional 21 days. The police requested more time to conduct a forensic analysis, retrieve CCTV footage from the area, and gather further witness statements.

Waithera was last seen heading out to deposit over Ksh 250,000 in a bank before she went missing. Her body was later found dumped in a thicket in Technology Farm, Nakuru West, under circumstances that pointed to foul play.

Family and friends of the young woman have been left devastated by the turn of events. Described as responsible and hardworking, Waithera had a bright future ahead of her. Her loved ones are now calling for swift and thorough justice.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the court is expected to rule soon on the police application to continue holding Wanjohi as the probe deepens.
