Infrastructure Crisis Takes Centre Stage as Senate Mashinani Kicks Off in Busia

The Senate of Kenya has commenced its week-long sittings in Busia County for the Senate Mashinani initiative, the fifth time the upper house has relocated outside Nairobi, but the delegation was immediately faced with the stark reality of the region’s poor infrastructure, including a severe lack of modern sporting facilities. The Senate's presence where senators are expected to hold plenary and committee sessions for five days was quickly overshadowed by the poor state of public amenities; notably, a pre-session football tournament had to be played on a primary school's field, triggering lament from residents who blamed "ill leadership" for the decay. Local, like Reagan Wesonga, pointed out the embarrassment, saying, "We do not have a stadium in Busia... The problem is poor leadership," and urged action to partner with the government to construct proper facilities, while Senator Okiya Omtatah simultaneously sought Senate intervention on the stalled Ksh600 million Busia Stadium project and other incomplete public investments. Despite the infrastructure crisis, leaders were optimistic that the initiative would build harmony, with Omtatah noting it would "break the bad eyes between the Senate and the County Assembly," and Busia Senate Speaker Fredrick Odilo expressing hope that the interaction would polish their mandates to improve service delivery, as the week's schedule also includes the Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA) engaging the local community on critical social issues like HIV awareness, teenage pregnancies, and gender-based violence, all while the initiative proceeds against a backdrop of counties still battling post-devolution challenges like political wrangles and dilapidated infrastructure.
