The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened a full investigation into the death of 26-year-old Simon Warui, who died while in custody at Mombasa’s Central Police Station.
A post-mortem examination revealed Warui suffered a fractured and dislocated neck leading to cardiorespiratory collapse, injuries consistent with a fall from height. Warui had earlier been reported missing from Nairobi’s Umoja I Estate on 14 September before his body was discovered in a police cell in Mombasa.
IPOA officials said they are collecting evidence, reviewing custody records and interviewing witnesses to establish how Warui died and whether any officers should face prosecution. They stressed that the rights and safety of persons in police custody must be upheld and promised an impartial inquiry.
The Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights have joined the Warui family in demanding a transparent investigation and accountability for those responsible. The case has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stronger safeguards to prevent deaths in police custody.
