Isiolo Governor Fights Impeachment in Senate, Cites Court Order and Political Motives.

Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo today strongly challenged his impeachment before the Senate, describing it as unlawful and politically driven, while relying on a court order that had halted the County Assembly’s process.

Guyo was impeached by the Isiolo County Assembly on June 13, 2025, after MCAs accused him of abuse of office, irregular recruitment of staff, misappropriation of public funds including bursaries, and failure to deliver development projects.

Appearing at the Parliament Buildings for the plenary hearing, Guyo rejected these claims. Through his lawyers, he argues the County Assembly acted in violation of a High Court order that barred debate and voting on the impeachment motion.

“This impeachment is a blatant violation of the law. There was no lawful sitting, and the Assembly ignored a valid court order,” his lead lawyer told the Senate.

He also questioned the authenticity of the Assembly’s records.

“They are using documents that are not certified. This process cannot stand when its foundation is false,” the defence argues.

Guyo’s team urged senators to dismiss the case entirely, citing previous Senate decisions where technical failures in impeachment proceedings led to acquittals.

“The Senate has upheld the principle that process matters. The same standard should apply here."

At the same time, County Assembly representatives maintained the impeachment is valid.

“We have shown evidence of abuse of office and misuse of public resources. The people of Isiolo deserve accountability,” an Assembly lawyer said.

The Senate today heard both sides in full plenary, having declined to form a special committee. All senators participated in the trial, but only the 47 county-elected senators will casted votes on the charges. A simple majority of at least 24 votes is needed to remove the governor from office.

Proceedings are expected to continue on Wednesday with further witness testimony and cross-examinations.

Political tensions remain high in Isiolo County, with rival leaders and residents divided over the impeachment process and the governor’s future.
