ISRAEL DEFENDS KILLING OF AL JAZEERA JOURNALIST, CLAIMS HE WAS HAMAS LEADER

Israel has confirmed it killed Anas al-Sharif, a 28-year-old Al Jazeera correspondent in Gaza, in a targeted airstrike outside al-Shifa Hospital, alleging he was a Hamas cell leader involved in rocket attacks. The strike, which also killed four other Al Jazeera staff, destroyed a media tent in Gaza City on Sunday August 10, 2025.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said al-Sharif “operated under journalistic cover” to direct militant operations, but provided no public evidence for the claim.
Al Jazeera strongly rejected the allegations, calling the attack a “premeditated assassination” aimed at silencing its coverage of the war. “This is an outrageous crime against press freedom,” the network said, urging international action.
The Committee to Protect Journalists and UN freedom of expression expert Irene Khan condemned the killing, warning that accusing reporters of militant ties without proof fuels a dangerous pattern of attacks on the press.
Al-Sharif had reported for Al Jazeera throughout the current Gaza conflict, often broadcasting live from the aftermath of Israeli strikes.
