Former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has ordered the immediate closure of Simba Cement’s mining activities in the Mazeras area of Kilifi County.
Joho, who co-owns the company through the Devki Group, cited environmental concerns and increased community complaints over land degradation and dust pollution as key reasons for the decision.
He emphasized the importance of balancing industrial development with the welfare of local communities and environmental conservation.
The closure comes amid growing tension between cement manufacturers and residents in the coastal region, with calls for stricter regulation of mining operations.
Authorities are expected to conduct a full environmental audit before any potential resumption of activities.
