KENYA RAILWAYS ISSUES URGENT SAFETY WARNING AGAINST DRIVING OR PARKING ON RAILWAY TRACKS

Kenya Railways has issued a strong warning to motorists and the public, urging them to refrain from driving or parking along railway tracks, as this practice presents serious safety hazards and is punishable by law. In a notice released on Friday, August 29, 2025, the corporation described the behaviour as dangerous, highlighting the significant risks it poses to motorists, passengers, and the smooth operation of train services. “This behaviour endangers the safety of motorists, passengers, and train operations and could lead to severe accidents, property damage, injuries, or even loss of life,” the notice stated.

Kenya Railways emphasized that railway lines and reserves are strictly for train use only, and unauthorized activity in these areas is considered an offense. The corporation warned that offenders could face legal action. For the safety of all, Kenya Railways urged the public to avoid walking or driving along the tracks and to cross only at designated level crossings. “Your cooperation is crucial in maintaining safety on our railways,” the notice appealed. The statement also reminded road users to always follow traffic and railway safety regulations.

Driving along railway tracks is extremely risky for both motorists and the smooth functioning of train services. The primary dangers include the risk of collisions with trains, which cannot swerve or stop quickly. A moving train requires a significant distance to come to a halt, making any vehicle on the tracks highly susceptible to being struck.

Such collisions are often fatal due to the sheer size and speed of trains. Additionally, vehicles may suffer damage as railway tracks are not designed for cars. The wheels of a vehicle can become lodged in the rails or on uneven ground, leaving drivers stranded. Low-clearance vehicles are especially at risk of getting stuck. As Kenya Railways emphasized, driving or parking on the tracks is illegal. Offenders face prosecution, fines, and even imprisonment under transport and safety laws.
