KENYA RAILWAYS TO REFUND PASSENGERS AFFECTED BY MADARAKA EXPRESS SUSPENSION

Kenya Railways has announced that refunds and alternative travel arrangements will be provided to passengers affected by the recent suspension of the Madaraka Express passenger service.
The suspension, which occurred on the night of July 6, 2025, disrupted the scheduled 10:00 p.m. train from Mombasa to Nairobi. The agency attributed the move to a technical hitch, clarifying that the issue was not related to any security threats or ongoing protests.
In a public statement, Kenya Railways apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured affected travelers that their tickets remained valid for the rescheduled service which departed at 8:00 a.m. on July 7 from Mombasa Terminus.
“All passengers who were scheduled to travel on the July 6 night train were advised to report to the station the next morning. No additional fare was required,” read part of the statement.
The agency further noted that passengers who incurred extra expenses or opted for alternative transport could contact Kenya Railways customer service for refunds or reimbursement considerations.
Kenya Railways also urged travelers to book tickets only through official channels, including their website, USSD code *639#, or designated station counters, to avoid fraud and ensure service reliability.
The Madaraka Express, which connects Kenya’s capital to the coastal city of Mombasa, remains a critical mode of transportation for thousands of commuters and tourists.
