The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), in collaboration with Magical Kenya, hosted the Magical Kenya Medical Tourism Forum in Nairobi , bringing together key stakeholders in the medical and tourism industries.
The forum provided a platform for discussions on growth opportunities, challenges, and strategies to enhance Kenya’s position in the global medical tourism market. Hospitals, medical specialists, hospitality and travel partners, and government representatives were among the attendees, reflecting a growing commitment to structuring Kenya’s medical tourism industry.
According to Ken Research, the global medical tourism market is projected to exceed Sh5.2 trillion ($40 billion) by 2025, driven by factors such as an aging global population, healthcare disparities, and advancements in medical technology.
Currently, Kenya attracts an estimated 5,000 medical tourists annually, primarily from neighboring countries.
However, industry leaders aim to formalize and expand this sector for sustained growth.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Samuel Odede, OGW, Director of Medical Services & Research at The Nairobi Hospital, underscored Kenya’s potential to become a top destination for international patients
“Kenya is proud of world-class medical facilities, skilled specialists, and advanced healthcare infrastructure. By fostering collaboration between the tourism and healthcare sectors, we can develop a thriving medical tourism industry that not only boosts our economy but also enhances healthcare services for both local and international patients,” said Mr. Odede.
The KTB presented its Medical Tourism Strategy, outlining key focus areas and initiatives aimed at improving Kenya’s visibility as a trusted healthcare destination.
A panel discussion, moderated by Mr. Muthuri Kinyamu, CEO of Accessible Travel, allowed government officials, medical experts, and industry leaders to share insights and recommendations.
The forum concluded with a call to action, emphasizing the need for stronger marketing efforts, improved regulatory frameworks, and strategic partnerships to drive Kenya’s medical tourism sector forward.
As the host venue, The Nairobi Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to providing top-tier healthcare services to both local and international patients.
