Nyamari Ongegu, popularly known as Nyashinski, has reached a major milestone in his music career after signing a historic recording deal with global music giant Sony Music. The announcement, made on Sony Music Africa’s official Instagram on Thursday, August 14, 2025, coincided with the release of his new single, Tai Chi, which marks the beginning of his projects under the label.
“Big welcome to the ‘Sony Music Africa’ Family @realshinski 🇰🇪 🐐 ‘Tai Chi’ out at midnight EAT,” the label posted.
Sean Watson, Managing Director of Sony Music Africa, hailed Nyashinski as a symbol of East Africa’s musical talent, noting his authenticity, versatility, and longevity in the industry. “This partnership is about more than music; it’s about elevating the culture and giving East African voices the global platform they deserve,” Watson said.
Nyashinski also expressed excitement over the global exposure the deal offers. “This partnership with Sony Music is more than just a deal; it’s a recognition of East Africa’s rich musical talent and a platform to showcase our stories to the world,” he said on his Instagram account.
Nyashinski’s journey began in the early 2000s with the rap trio Kleptomaniax. After the group went on hiatus, he spent several years abroad before returning in 2016 with a more mature solo sound, releasing hits like Now You Know and Malaika. His ability to adapt from group performances to award-winning solo projects demonstrates his versatility and staying power in Kenya’s music scene.
The deal with Sony Music is expected to further elevate Nyashinski’s career and shine a global spotlight on East African music, positioning him as a key ambassador of the region’s artistic talent. Sony Music operates globally, promoting artists across multiple genres. Its Africa division focuses on discovering and elevating African talent, providing marketing, production, and distribution support to help artists reach international audiences while showcasing African culture on the world stage.
