KENYA'S BLOOD MOON

Kenyans are in for a rare treat this Sunday as the night sky prepares to stage a breathtaking show. On Sunday, September 7, a total lunar eclipse will paint the moon in a deep red hue—famously known as a blood moon—with the added spectacle of the planet Saturn shining nearby.

According to astronomers, such a pairing of a blood moon and Saturn happens only once or twice in a decade, making this a must-watch event for stargazers.

Statistics say that total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface. During this phase, sunlight bends through Earth’s atmosphere, filtering out blue light and leaving the Moon glowing with shades of crimson or copper. This same effect, called Rayleigh scattering, is what makes the sky appear blue during the day and our sunsets glow red.

As per the Kenya Space Agency , the total eclipse will last an impressive 82 minutes, one of the longest in recent years. Including the penumbral and partial phases, the entire event will stretch over five hours.

Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are visible across entire continents, meaning anyone in Kenya with clear skies will be able to watch. And the best part—it’s perfectly safe to enjoy with the naked eye. While telescopes or binoculars may give a sharper view of the red moon and Saturn’s glow, they’re not essential to appreciate the wonder.

Not every eclipse results in a blood moon. Sometimes Earth only partially blocks the Sun’s light, leaving what looks like a “bite” out of the moon. Other times, the moon slips through Earth’s lighter outer shadow—the penumbra—causing only a faint dimming visible to seasoned sky watchers.

This Sunday, however, Kenyans will get the full spectacle. For many, it will be a chance to pause, look up, and share in a rare cosmic moment that reminds us of the vast universe beyond our everyday lives.
