KNH MURDER SUSPECT TO BE HELD AT MBAGATHI HOSPITAL OVER MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS

Kennedy Kalombotole, the main suspect in the gruesome killings of two patients at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), will now be detained at Mbagathi Hospital following a court directive issued on Thursday.

Kalombotole, who is linked to two separate murder cases at the facility in February and July 2025, was initially held at Kilimani Police Station. However, during a hearing at the Kibera Law Courts, Magistrate Daisy Mutai ruled that he could no longer be held in police custody due to ongoing mental health issues.

The court heard that Kalombotole requires specialised medical attention, close monitoring, and dietary support that the police station could not provide. Officers from Kilimani told the court they lacked essential medication and resources to ensure his wellbeing, adding that he had refused to eat.

His legal team opposed his continued detention at Kilimani, recommending that he be moved to either Mama Lucy or Mbagathi hospitals. The prosecution objected to any transfer to KNH, citing safety concerns for both staff and patients, given the suspect’s history at the hospital.

Kalombotole is accused of killing two fellow patients during his stay at KNH. One of the victims, 38-year-old Edward Maingi—who was recovering from a stroke—died from severe throat injuries. A postmortem conducted at the Kenyatta Funeral Home confirmed that the cause of death was excessive bleeding from deep lacerations.

The court’s ruling now places Kalombotole under medical supervision at Mbagathi as investigations continue.
