Portifas Odipo, widely known as Majembe, delivered a commanding performance at the Vurugu Fight Night, knocking out Ferdinand Omondi alias Mbavu Destroyer in a high-stakes bout at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on April 4, 2026.
The headline clash, which grew from a viral TikTok rivalry into one of Kenya’s most talked-about amateur boxing events, ended in the fourth round after Mbavu Destroyer failed to continue, handing Majembe a technical knockout victory.
By the time the fight was stopped, Majembe had already stamped his authority on the contest. Scorecards from the first three rounds showed him in clear control, posting 30-27, 30-27, and 32-27 leads respectively.
The decisive moment came in round four under controversial circumstances. Reports indicate a strike landed below the belt, after which Mbavu Destroyer appeared unable to recover, with some accounts suggesting he briefly lost consciousness and was stretchered out of the ring. Despite the debate, referees upheld Majembe’s win based on his dominant lead prior to the stoppage.
The outcome has since split opinion online, with a section of fans arguing the foul tainted the result, while others insist Majembe’s earlier dominance left little doubt about the deserved winner.
The fight, organised by comedian and content creator Oga Obinna, drew a packed crowd at Kasarani and massive online viewership, underlining the growing appetite for grassroots boxing entertainment in Kenya.
Majembe’s victory came with a lucrative reward package, marking one of the richest prize hauls in local amateur boxing. He walked away with the Vurugu Championship belt, Sh1,000,000 in cash, a brand new Toyota Noah courtesy of Odi Bets, a Taro GP1 sport bike valued at Sh385,000, and a one-year gym membership. An additional Sh1,200,000 pledge from a Kenyan well-wisher pushed his total earnings from the night to over Sh2.5 million.
The financial backing behind the event reflected its scale. President William Ruto had earlier pledged Sh1 million to each fighter for training and sponsored 2,000 tickets, bringing his total contribution to Sh4 million. Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri added Sh2 million, while businessman Oketch Salah contributed Sh200,000. ODM leader Oburu Oginga also made a cash donation in support of the event.
In the buildup, Mbavu Destroyer, 25, had dominated social media with his flamboyant personality, even receiving prayers and Sh50,000 from controversial preacher Pastor Kanyari. Majembe, 21, in contrast, maintained a quieter approach, letting his performance in the ring speak for itself.
Tensions had already boiled over during the March 25 weigh-in, where the two fighters had to be separated twice after a heated face-off went viral and boosted last-minute ticket sales.
The event also featured commentary from veteran entertainer DJ Afro, who made his debut as a live boxing commentator, bringing his signature energy to the ringside experience.
Following the bout, President Ruto praised both fighters for what he described as an electrifying contest that reignited national interest in boxing. In a statement shared on April 5, he congratulated Majembe on the victory while commending both athletes for delivering a thrilling match that kept Kenyans on edge.
The Head of State further pledged government support to grow boxing in the country, promising investment in talent development and opportunities to elevate the sport.
The fight’s massive turnout, both physically and online, underscored a resurgence of boxing’s appeal in Kenya—raising expectations that the Vurugu Fight Night could mark the beginning of a new era for the sport if sustained support follows.
