MARAGA LAUNCHES PRESIDENTIAL BID UNDER OUTFIT FOUNDED BY ODM DEFECTOR

Retired Chief Justice David Maraga has officially entered the 2027 presidential race by unveiling a seemingly underdog United Green Movement Party (UGMP) - founded by former ODM Mp - as the vehicle for his journey to the country's top job.

Maraga, who steered the judiciary during some of the country’s most turbulent political moments launched The United Green Movement Party (UGMP) at its headquarters in Nairobi on Thursday, 2. He formally accepted the new brand and pledged to embark on a nationwide campaign to build momentum ahead of the polls.

“I accepted the call to join this party because it aligns with my personal principles and ideologies on a wide range of matters. This includes matters on the rule of law, respect for human rights and democratic governance, among others,” Maraga told supporters gathered at the Green Action House.

He went on to promise a people-centered campaign, declaring: “I have committed to building and restoring the dignity of Kenyans as well as protecting our human rights.”

The 72-year-old former CJ is remembered for his historic ruling that nullified the 2017 presidential election results — a bold decision that cemented his reputation as an independent-minded jurist. His entry into politics is expected to add a fresh dimension to the 2027 contest, which is already shaping up to be highly competitive.

The UGMP, though relatively small compared to Kenya’s political giants, is positioning itself as a reformist movement with strong emphasis on environmental justice, good governance, and youth empowerment. The party is co-led by Neto Agostinho, the former Ndhiwa MP, who left ODM to build the movement.

Neto, who legislated Ndhiwa from 2012 to 2017 has been pivotal in crafting the party’s vision. He welcomed Maraga’s entry as a “game-changer” that could elevate UGMP from a fringe outfit to a national force.

Maraga’s candidacy , mostly vouched by the GenZs is viewed as a direction towards integral leadership and constitutionalism.

UGMP now plans a countrywide mobilization drive, including policy forums and coalition-building efforts, as it works to establish a foothold ahead of the official campaign season.

Whether Maraga’s bid will transform UGMP into a formidable contender remains to be seen, but his decision has already injected a new wave of anticipation into the 2027 race.
