MOI UNIVERSITY LECTURERS BEGIN STRIKE OVER UNMET DEMANDS

Moi University lecturers have officially downed their tools, launching a strike despite assurances from the institution’s management that it is open to engaging with the University Academic Staff Union (UASU). Speaking on August 20, 2025, UASU Secretary at Moi University, Busola Wegasa, confirmed that the strike would go ahead. She cited the administration’s failure to honour a previously agreed-upon return-to-work formula, among other unresolved issues. The lecturers emphasized that they would not return to work unless specific demands were met.

Among the key demands are the payment of June and July 2025 salaries based on the rates outlined in the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Additionally, the lecturers are calling for the full implementation of the Return-To-Work Formula signed on November 30, 2024, between UASU and the University Council. The union also insists on complete compliance with the clauses relating to staff review, promotion, and retirement age, as stipulated in the 2021–2025 National CBA. Furthermore, they demand that the university uphold the fundamental rights and freedoms of workers as guaranteed under Article 41 and Chapter 4 of the Kenyan Constitution.

UASU had issued a seven-day strike notice on August 12, 2025, with the strike officially set to begin on August 20. In response, Moi University acknowledged the notice on August 15 and recognized the concerns raised by the union. The university’s management stated that it is working closely with the University Council, the Ministry of Education, and other stakeholders to address the issues through constructive dialogue. Despite the ongoing strike, Moi University assured students, parents, and guardians that it remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted academic progress and the continued provision of quality education.
