NACADA RAISES CONCERN OVER AIRBNB BEING USED FOR ILLEGAL DRUG ACTIVITIES.

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has raised alarm over the increasing use of Airbnb rentals for illegal drug activities across the country.

This comes as authorities report a surge in cases of illicit drug abuse and distribution in privately rented spaces, making it difficult for law enforcement to track down offenders.

According to NACADA, the privacy offered by short-term rental accommodations has made them a hotspot for drug dealers and users, enabling underground drug operations to thrive.

Speaking on the matter, NACADA CEO Anthony Omerikwa emphasized the need for stricter monitoring and vetting of tenants in such rentals.

“We have noted with concern that some individuals are exploiting Airbnb rentals to run illegal drug dens. This poses a serious threat to our efforts in combating substance abuse, especially among the youth,” said Omerikwa.

Investigations reveal that drug syndicates prefer Airbnbs because they lack the oversight that hotels and lodges have, making them ideal for parties and drug-related gatherings.

Recent police raids in major cities, including Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa, have uncovered large quantities of narcotics in such premises.

Law enforcement agencies, in collaboration with NACADA, are now working on new regulations that will require Airbnb hosts to conduct more rigorous identity checks on guests. Additionally, NACADA is urging property owners to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities.
