NAIROBI LANDLORDS, TENANTS FACE ARREST OVER ILLEGAL DUMPING IN PIPELINE ESTATE

Nairobi landlords and tenants who persist in illegal waste disposal risk arrest, the County Government has warned.

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, issued a stern statement on Sunday, confirming the county’s renewed crackdown on garbage dumping in the Pipeline area. He revealed that a fresh round of cleanup exercises would begin this week, targeting roads that were recently damaged by wastewater and improper waste disposal.

“This coming week, we shall resume the cleaning exercise along roads in Pipeline, including backfilling damaged sections caused by wastewater discharge and illegal dumping,” Mosiria stated.

He noted with concern that despite previous notices, some tenants continue to recklessly discard waste while landlords fail to enforce sanitation standards within their premises.

Mosiria emphasised that the county will no longer issue warnings, adding that both landlords and tenants found culpable will face legal action.

“This is the only way to restore order, uphold the law, and ensure our city remains clean and livable for all,” he said.

The announcement comes amid growing complaints from Pipeline residents about deteriorating road conditions, frequent blockages in drainage systems, and the spread of foul odours in the estate.

City Hall has been under pressure to enforce environmental laws more strictly in informal settlements, where poor waste management continues to endanger public health and infrastructure.

The county’s enforcement teams are expected to accompany the cleanup crews this week to identify and apprehend offenders.
