The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has taken the step of revoking the driving permits of 62 drivers who were working for six public transport firms after a compliance review revealed that safety measures had been flouted in several places. In a notice that was made public on Tuesday, December 9, the Authority informed that the drivers whose licenses are affected would have to submit themselves to a compulsory retesting first before their licenses are restored.
"This decision is taken following a compliance evaluation that identified a number of breaches and raised serious safety issues," NTSA pointed out.
Among the companies that had their licenses suspended are Tahmeed Express Limited (23) Latema Travelers Bus and Safari Company Limited (13), Meru Nissan Operators Sacco (10), Moline Prestige Services Shuttle Limited (6) MTrans Sacco Limited (7), and Enabled Mashariki Investment Limited (3).
The Authority has also ordered the operators involved to train all their drivers in road safety awareness and bring certain vehicles for inspection in addition to the drivers being retested.
"The retesting of drivers is a part of the larger proactive measures that aim to guarantee that each driver has the necessary skills and is competent enough to operate safely on our roads," the statement continued.
NTSA also revealed that there are still several public transport operators who are under evaluation as part of the ongoing efforts to enforce conformity with the set safety standards. "These measures are indicative of our steadfast and continuous commitment to road safety, especially during the festive season," the Authority declared.
