In a move sending shockwaves through the political establishment, Siaya Governor James Orengo — a long-time ally of Raila Odinga — is scheduled to meet President William Ruto at State House on Thursday, defying growing pressure from within his own party.
Orengo’s visit comes at a time when he is facing fierce backlash from ODM loyalists, including impeachment threats by Siaya MCAs, for openly criticizing Raila and urging the party to sever ties with Ruto’s broad-based government. His stance has been viewed by some as a betrayal of ODM’s core leadership, sparking tensions in Nyanza politics.
Though the official agenda of the meeting remains unclear, sources suggest the talks will focus on development matters for Siaya County. However, the timing and optics of the visit have fueled speculation about a deeper political shift — possibly signaling Orengo’s willingness to chart a more independent path.
Political analysts say the meeting could either reignite cracks within ODM or set the stage for broader political realignments ahead of 2027.
Governor Orengo is expected to be accompanied by senior county officials and key political allies. Neither State House nor the Governor’s office had released an official statement by press time.
This bold move underscores Orengo’s increasingly maverick posture and raises questions about his future within the ODM fold — and the broader opposition landscape.
