POLICE OFFICER ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY DEMANDING BRIBE FROM MOTHER IN DEFILEMENT CASE

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a police constable based at Sarangombe Police Post in Kibera for allegedly soliciting a KSh4,000 bribe to facilitate action in a defilement case.

Investigations indicate the officer demanded the money from the victim’s mother as a condition to arrest the suspect. The case had earlier been reported at the same station, but no action was taken until the alleged bribe request.

According to the EACC, the operation on Wednesday, August 13, led to the arrest of the officer and a civilian accused of acting as an intermediary. The civilian is reported to have collected the money from the complainant on behalf of the officer.

Both suspects were taken to the EACC’s Integrity Centre in Nairobi for processing and are expected to be arraigned in court. The anti-graft agency maintains that such arrests are part of a broader crackdown aimed at restoring public trust in law enforcement.

The arrest comes a week after the release of the National Ethics and Corruption Survey 2024, which ranked police officers as the most frequent bribe receivers at 29.93 per cent. The survey showed that nearly all bribes were paid in cash, with most payments made before the service was delivered.
