PRESIDENT RUTO MOURNS NGUGI WA THIONG’O

Kenya’s president William Ruto has led the country in mourning the death of celebrated writer professor Ngugi wa Thiong’o. In his tribute posted on his official X account, the president praised the late intellectual as a courageous literary giant whose 87 years of work left a big impact on Kenyan and global literature. According to his tribute, it is clear that the late professor deserved a Nobel Prize for Literature.

Other prominent leaders also joined in paying tribute to the late author. Former prime minister Raila Odinga described Ngugi as towering figure in African literature. Odinga highlighted his legacy as a former political detainee and criticizing the jubilee administration at the time for allegedly failing to uphold post-independence ideals.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro also celebrated the late writer saying he was an icon and he will be remembered for his contributions and elevation the name of our country Kenya.

The late professor’s literacy journey began with English language novels such as Weep Not, Child and The River Between, but he later shifted to writing in his native language kikuyu in aims of promoting African languages and cultural diversity. Despite facing political imprisonment, years of exile and even assassination attempts, he remained an advocate for social justice and cultural pride.

Ngugi leaves behind a powerful legacy of creativity and deep love for culture and his people.
