President William Ruto is set to begin a five-day tour of the Mt. Kenya region amid growing political tensions and economic grievances from residents and leaders in the vote-rich area. The visit comes at a crucial time when his administration faces mounting pressure over unfulfilled campaign promises, high taxation, and a struggling economy.
Sources close to State House indicate that Ruto’s tour aims to reassure the region of his commitment to development projects and economic reforms. However, analysts suggest that he will have to navigate a tough political landscape, with sections of Mt. Kenya leaders openly expressing dissatisfaction with his leadership.
“This visit is not just about launching projects; it’s a test of his relationship with a region that overwhelmingly supported him in the last election,” said a political analyst. “He will have to address real concerns from the people, especially the high cost of living and the feeling of political sidelining.”
Among the key grievances expected to dominate discussions are the controversial Finance Act, delayed infrastructure projects, and claims that the region’s leaders are being sidelined in government appointments. Some local leaders have hinted at the possibility of a political realignment ahead of 2027, adding more pressure on Ruto to consolidate his support.
Despite the challenges, Ruto remains confident that his development agenda will win over the people. “We are committed to fulfilling our promises, and this tour is about engaging with the people directly and addressing their concerns,” a senior government official stated.
As Ruto embarks on this critical tour, all eyes will be on how he navigates the political undercurrents and whether he can successfully reaffirm his influence in the region that played a key role in his election victory.
