PROTESTERS DEMAND RESIGNATION OF DEPUTY POLICE CHIEF OVER BLOGGER'S DEATH

Dozens of protesters took to the streets of Nairobi’s Central Business District on Thursday, 12th June 2025, calling for the immediate resignation of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the National Police Service, Eliud Lagat, following the controversial death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang.

The protest coincided with the reading of the 2025/2026 National Budget by Cabinet Secretary for Treasury, John Mbadi. Demonstrators chanted, “No justice, no budget” and “Lagat must go,” accusing the police leadership of complicity in Ojwang’s death.

Ojwang, a resident of Homa Bay and a well-known blogger, was reportedly arrested at his home on Sunday and transported to Nairobi’s Central Police Station. His arrest was allegedly linked to a social media post deemed defamatory to DIG Eliud Lagat. He later died in police custody under unclear circumstances.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed in an earlier press briefing that Ojwang’s arrest had followed a formal complaint filed by DIG Lagat. However, the circumstances surrounding the blogger’s death have triggered widespread public outcry and demands for accountability.

The protest brought business in parts of the city center to a standstill, as many shops and offices temporarily closed due to security concerns.

Both the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have since appeared before the Senate to respond to questions regarding the incident. Some political leaders have also joined the calls for Lagat to step down, pending investigations.

As investigations continue, the public awaits answers and justice for Albert Ojwang, whose death has reignited national debate over police accountability and citizens' rights.
