RUTO ANNOUNCES NATIONWIDE POLICE RECRUITMENT IN SEPTEMBER 2025

President William Ruto has announced a nationwide police recruitment exercise that will see 10,000 new officers join the National Police Service starting September 2025.
Speaking on Thursday August28, 2025, the Head of State said the recruitment will include 4,000 candidates drawn from the National Youth Service (NYS), a move aimed at boosting manpower and addressing the long-standing shortage within the service.
The exercise comes after a freeze on police hiring since March 2022, which was imposed due to budget constraints. Ruto noted that the fresh intake is expected to strengthen Kenya’s security framework and align with the United Nations-recommended police-to-population ratio of 1:450.
Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and NPSC Chairperson Eliud Kinuthia underscored that the recruitment will be guided by transparency and inclusivity, with a particular focus on increasing the number of women officers. Female representation in the service currently stands at 14 percent, with a new target of 30 percent.
The National Police Service Commission has urged Kenyans to remain alert for official announcements of recruitment dates and venues, which will be published through the Kenya Gazette, MyGov, and NPSC platforms, while warning against fake adverts circulating online.
The planned intake is part of broader police reforms aimed at modernizing the service and improving security across the country.
