RUTO INCREASES CASH REWARDS FOR ATHLETES, INTRODUCES NEW CHAMPIONSHIP BONUSES

President William Ruto has announced a major increase in cash rewards for Kenyan athletes, unveiling a new package of incentives aimed at boosting performance and recognizing excellence in sports.
Under the revised framework, individual Olympic gold medalists will now pocket KSh 3 million, up from KSh 750,000, while silver medalists will receive KSh 2 million, a fourfold rise from the previous KSh 500,000. Bronze medalists will earn KSh 1 million, nearly triple the earlier reward of KSh 350,000.
Team sports have also seen a significant increase, with gold winners now set to receive KSh 750,000 (up from KSh 100,000), silver KSh 500,000 (up from KSh 75,000), and bronze KSh 375,000 (up from KSh 50,000).
The Ministry of Sports has further allocated KSh 55 million in payouts for recent competitions and an additional KSh 15 million for record-breaking performances. Athletes and teams that qualify for international championships will also be eligible for bonuses of up to KSh 2.5 million, subject to approval by the Sports Cabinet Secretary.
Alongside the cash incentives, the government is fast-tracking long-term investments in sports infrastructure and talent development. Projects include the construction of Talanta Sports City, renovations at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums, and upgrades to regional arenas such as Eliud Kipchoge Stadium in Eldoret, Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, and Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.
The administration has also launched 37 Constituency Sports Academies and expanded the Talanta Hela program to nurture young talent and create sustainable careers in sports and the creative economy.
Ruto emphasized that the increased rewards and investments are part of his government’s plan to “make Kenya a sporting powerhouse” by recognizing athletes’ efforts, inspiring new talent, and ensuring long-term support for sports development.
