RUTO, MUSEVENI SIGN 8 MOUs TO CEMENT KENYA-UGANDA TIES

President William Ruto on Wednesday July 30, 2025, reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Uganda, as he hosted Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni at State House, Nairobi. The two leaders signed eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors.
The agreements cover strategic areas including mining, transport, quality assurance, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, urban development, and trade. President Ruto emphasized the importance of eliminating trade barriers, noting that both nations must “remove all non-tariff barriers and bureaucracies” that hinder cross-border business and regional integration.
As part of their joint development agenda, the two heads of state pledged to fast-track the expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha through Malaba and onward to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic, with implementation expected before the end of 2025.
In addition, a Busia Metropolitan Urban Development Plan was unveiled. The project, running from 2025 to 2028, will revamp the border town’s infrastructure, including the creation of shared cross-border markets and new transportation corridors.
President Museveni, on his part, hailed Kenya as a vital trade and transit partner and urged sustained cooperation within the East African Community framework.
The signing ceremony is seen as a major step forward in strengthening Kenya-Uganda relations and fostering economic growth and regional stability through shared infrastructure and policy alignment.
