RUTO SEEKS JAPAN’S BACKING TO STRENGTHEN KENYA’S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

President William Ruto has urged Japan to support Kenya’s efforts to transform its healthcare system, citing the need for stronger universal health coverage and better access to affordable services.

The Head of State made the appeal on Wednesday, August 20, during an investment forum in Yokohama, Japan. He outlined Kenya’s ambition to expand healthcare partnerships with Japan, especially in areas of technology, diagnostics, and medical research.

Ruto emphasised the importance of technology-driven solutions in addressing inefficiencies within the health sector. He said Kenya was keen on deploying systems that reduce waste and strengthen accountability in health financing.

The President also highlighted the need for enhanced diagnostics and disease management, stressing that Kenya’s health facilities must be equipped to detect and treat illnesses more effectively.

Beyond health, Ruto underscored the broader scope of Kenya’s partnership with Japan, pointing to trade, investment, and development cooperation as pillars of the two nations’ ties. He described the relationship as one that continues to deepen and deliver tangible results for citizens on both sides.

Kenya’s healthcare sector has faced persistent challenges, including inadequate resources, gaps in insurance coverage, and shortages of medical personnel. Despite reforms introduced under the Social Health Authority (SHA), many Kenyans remain frustrated by rising costs and difficulties accessing services.

The government has rolled out new measures, including the SHA lipa pole pole scheme, allowing households to make flexible instalments toward annual health contributions. Officials argue the move will ease financial strain and help maintain continuous coverage for vulnerable families.

Ruto has framed healthcare as a central pillar of his administration’s social agenda, but widespread dissatisfaction has persisted. His latest push for Japan’s support reflects the government’s acknowledgement that international partnerships will be crucial in stabilising and modernising the sector.
