RUTO’S 2027 RUNNING MATE: FACTORS THE PRESIDENT MUST CONSIDER AMID POLITICAL TENSIONS AND ALLIANCE SHIFTS

As the 2027 general election approaches, President William Ruto faces a complex political equation in choosing his next running mate.

The decision comes amid a fallout with his former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, and increasing pressure to manage new and old political alliances. Analysts suggest that the choice will have far-reaching implications, not only for the outcome of the election but also for the future of Kenyan politics.

Balancing Loyalty, Coalitions, and Public Sentiment

Ruto is expected to weigh multiple variables his current alliance with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the political future of Kithure Kindiki, and the expectations of Gen Z voters and long-time political allies.

"This leaves the President walking a tightrope," said Political Risk Analyst Dismas Mokua. "His experience with Gachagua has shown that picking a running mate is a complicated science, involving both predictable and unpredictable factors."

According to Mokua, Ruto’s 2027 running mate will need to be someone who satisfies both political strategy and coalition arithmetic.

Voter Mobilization a Key Priority

Dr. Luchetu Likaka, a political analyst, noted that voter mobilization will be a central factor in Ruto’s decision. He argued that the President may consider a running mate from ODM, particularly one with strong grassroots support and regional influence.

"Voter mobilization is about more than retaining your base it’s about expanding it," said Likaka. "A candidate from ODM could signal a national coalition and attract disillusioned opposition supporters."

Political commentator Maimuna Mwidau echoed this view, stating that the ability to attract new votes and build coalitions would be the most important consideration.

"The running mate must be able to galvanize winning numbers and bring together a support base that cuts across regions and parties," she said.

Regional Balance Still Matters

Regional dynamics remain central to presidential politics in Kenya. According to Likaka, with the Rift Valley and Mount Kenya regions still largely supportive of the President, attention may shift to swing regions such as the Coast, Western, and Nyanza.

“Ruto will likely consider a candidate from a region outside his strongholds to broaden his appeal,” he explained.

Coalition Building for 2027 and Beyond

Mwidau emphasized that coalition-building will play a significant role, especially in light of anticipated political transitions by 2032.

“The running mate should complement Ruto both ideologically and geographically,” she noted. “Coalitions that represent all regions are not just a constitutional requirement they're also key to political stability.”

Likaka added that forming a broad coalition could shape the next decade of Kenyan politics, especially if both Ruto and Raila Odinga plan to exit the political stage after 2032.

Implications for ODM and Opposition Politics

Selecting a running mate from ODM could also shift the balance within the opposition. According to Likaka, such a move could force ODM leader Raila Odinga to confront internal succession plans and redefine the party’s identity.

“Ruto is not just preparing for 2027 he’s shaping the post-Raila political landscape,” Likaka said. “The move would have seismic consequences for the opposition, forcing Azimio to navigate a looming leadership vacuum.”
