SEYCHELLES OPPOSITION LEADER BEATS THE INCUMBENT

Seychelles’ Electoral Commission has declared the Country's opposition leader Patrick Herminie victorious in a closely contested runoff , defeating incumbent Wavel Ramkalawan .

Herminie, who leads the United Seychelles (US) party, secured 52.7% of the vote against Ramkalawan’s 47.3%, marking a significant political shift for the Indian Ocean nation.

In his heartfelt victory address, Herminie vowed to tackle the high cost of living, restore public services, and foster unity among citizens, declaring the outcome as “a new chapter for all Seychellois.”

“I will be the president of all Seychellois, and I will end divisions by ceasing preferences and giving everyone the opportunity to thrive,” Herminie said.

President Ramkalawan, who had been seeking a second term, gracefully accepted defeat and congratulated his successor, remarking that he leaves behind “a legacy that makes many presidents blush.”

The election headed into a runoff after no candidate managed to secure an outright majority in the first round held two weeks earlier.

Herminie, a former Speaker of Parliament, has had a controversial political journey. In 2023, he was charged with witchcraft — accusations he dismissed as a politically motivated attempt to derail his presidential ambitions. The charges were dropped the following year, clearing his path to contest the top seat.

His victory comes just weeks after his party reclaimed a parliamentary majority, overturning the dominance of Ramkalawan’s Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) party.

Ramkalawan’s loss adds to a growing trend across Africa where incumbents have recently been unseated, following the ouster of Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera last month amid widespread frustration over soaring living costs and incompetent governance.

For Seychelles, Herminie’s triumph marks the dawn of a new political era — one anchored on promises of inclusion, economic relief, and national renewal. His victory has also rekindled hope among other opposition leaders across the region, including Uganda’s Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who has declared his intention to end President Yoweri Museveni’s nearly four-decade rule in the upcoming January 2026 elections.

In Tanzania, opposition parties such as CHADEMA, led by Tundu Lissu, and ACT-Wazalendo, under Luhaga Mpina, have voiced similar ambitions, though their efforts have been hampered by what they term politically motivated disqualifications and restrictions imposed under President Samia Suluhu’s administration.

Meanwhile, in Kenya, the United Opposition has drawn inspiration from this growing regional wave of political change, expressing renewed optimism in its quest to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
