SHERIA MTAANI URGES LSK TO PUSH FOR LAWYER PROTECTION AFTER MBOBU KILLING

Sheria Mtaani, a public interest legal aid group, has petitioned the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) to urgently pursue stronger security measures for lawyers following the murder of advocate Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.
The lobby warned of growing dangers facing legal practitioners and cited the killings of lawyers Anthony Nahashon Ngunjiri, Elizabeth Koki Musyoki, Willie Kimani and Mandela Nabaala as evidence of a troubling pattern.
While acknowledging LSK’s past support for advocates under threat, Sheria Mtaani noted the society lacks statutory powers to guarantee physical protection. The group highlighted lawyers’ difficulty in obtaining firearm certificates, contrasting this with the relative ease for politicians, and termed the disparity “indefensible.”
It urged LSK to engage the Ministry of Interior and other security agencies to develop structured safeguards for members of the bar, and asked that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen be summoned to discuss practical solutions.
Sheria Mtaani has given LSK seven days to respond with what it calls “tangible and proactive measures” to protect advocates from escalating violence.
