In an unexpected wave of digital protest, thousands of Kenyan youth have taken to social media to mock what they see as the government’s attempt to tribalize the Saba Saba demonstrations by branding them as a “Kikuyu affair.”
In a coordinated online response, Gen Z users from across the country humorously "joined the Kikuyu tribe," sparking a viral trend under hashtags like #SiriNiNumbers, #HiCousins, and #RejectTribalPolitics.
Many introduced themselves with tongue-in-cheek tribal mash-up names such as Mwangi Wambani from Kiambu, Omondi Kamau, Chege Kiplagat, Otieno Njoroge, and Aisha Njuguna — playfully rejecting ethnic divisions and claiming unity through satire.
“Now that Saba Saba is a Kikuyu thing, I’ve officially relocated to Limuru. Call me Muthoni Musyoka,” one user posted, followed by dozens of similar tweets and memes.
The trend is a reaction to statements from some government-affiliated voices who appeared to dismiss the July 7th protests as being Kikuyu-driven — a narrative youth believe is being weaponized to divide a growing, issue-based movement.
“When you can’t silence a revolution, you tribalize it. Sadly for them, we’re too awake,” wrote another.
Scenes from Nairobi, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, and Mombasa showed youth of all backgrounds protesting against economic hardship, poor governance, and rising unemployment — reinforcing that Saba Saba is generational, not tribal.
With humor and defiance, Kenya’s youth are sending a powerful message: they are united, digitally mobilized, and far beyond the grip of old-school tribal politics.
