During his ongoing visit to the United States on Monday, August 11, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stirred controversy with remarks linking the national football team to intelligence operations.

Speaking at an engagement with members of the Kenyan diaspora, Gachagua alleged that some players in the Harambee Stars squad, currently competing in the African Nations Championship (CHAN), were not ordinary footballers.

“We love football, but let us not mix it with covert operations. Some of those players you see running in the CHAN tournament are not just footballers – they are part of the 101 Squad at the National Intelligence Service. Yes! They are NIS officers, planted in the team for reasons only known to those in power,” Gachagua claimed.

He went on to question the motive behind what he described as “planting intelligence officers” in the national team, warning that such actions could undermine the spirit of sport.

“We cannot allow our national team to be turned into a covert operation,” he added.

The remarks have already drawn sharp reactions online, with some social media users demanding proof, while others accuse the politician of making reckless statements.

Neither the Ministry of Sports nor the National Intelligence Service had issued an official response to the allegations by press time.
